Fast regular scintillation of v.h.f. signals received from earth satellites has been distinguished from scintillation often associated with an irregular ionospheric diffracting phase screen. The appearance of such regular scintillation is shown to correlate with the occurrence of sporadic-E. Models consistent with its features are described, which attribute the effects to the presence of sporadic-E patches. Results show that scintillation should be further classified if inconsistencies in interpretation are to be avoided.
