The paper deals with Centrospazio research activity on MPD thrusters and in particular on the two main concerns: cathode lifetime, and thrust efficiency increment. Concerning cathode technology, Centrospazio has developed two hollow cathode models for single and multiple channel configurations. Recent experimental validation of the first model is presented as well as the description of the second model and preliminary encouraging outputs. About efficiency concern, Centrospazio and research groups from RFX Consortium and INFM are involved in an extensive experimental investigation on plasma fluctuations. Recent results have shown the occurrence of gross MHD instabilities, whenever the current rises beyond a threshold value. These instabilities are helical m/n = 1/1 kink modes and their presence is consistent with the Kruskal-Shafranov stability criterion, which in turn well agrees with semi-empirical Tikhonov criterion. The growth of these modes is proposed as the cause of the onset phenomena in MPD thrusters.
