During the last quarter of 1962 several balloons carrying radiation detectors were launched over Lindau/Harz (Germany), Kiruna (Sweden) and Tromsø (Norway). Excess radiation was measured during all flights, the cause of which is interpreted to be radioactive debris from nuclear weapons tests. An estimate on the activity gives a maximum value of about 10-12 Curie/cm3, measured on 22 October over Lindau. Possible relations between the radiation measurements and v.l.f. propagation are discussed.
