We present optical photometry (BVR) and spectroscopy for 27 X-ray sources detected by XMM-Newton toward the Serpens star-forming region. Optical photometry was obtained using the 90prime CCD on the 2.3 meter Bok Telescope and optical spectroscopy with the multi-object spectrograph HYDRA at the WIYN 4 meter telescope, both located at Kitt Peak, AZ. Effective temperatures were derived from spectra covering the wavelength range from 624.9-765.7 nm. Line-of-sight visual extinctions were estimated using (V-R) and (J-H) photometry combined with intrinsic colors informed from the spectral types. Stellar luminosities were calculated from dereddened magnitudes combined with spectral-type-dependent bolometric corrections. H-R diagrams were constructed for the sample and compared to theoretical tracks and isochrones for pre-main sequence stars. The X-ray sources studied are found to be pre-main sequence objects and, with the exception of two early-type stars, range in mass from the hydrogen-burning limit to 0.6 M⊙. Ages range from 0.3-10 Myr with a median age of 3 Myr. This suggests we are observing an older, more evolved young stellar population than that embedded in the Serpens core. A color-magnitude diagram is presented for over 1000 objects with accurate V and R photometry indicating a significant population of pre-main sequence objects in the Serpens region.
