A model of nonlinear internal gravity waves in a deep slowly varying atmosphere is examined. A solution for waves whose vertical scale is small compared with the scale height is obtained. A wave action equation for a single internal gravity wave mode, which is valid for arbitrary wave amplitude, is derived. It is shown that there is a critical amplitude such that no steady solution can exist for larger amplitudes and that where a steady state is possible, low-frequency waves have maxima in wave energy density at levels where the mean flow has minima and vice versa. The effects are identified as being the result of wave-mean flow interactions.
