An analysis of the possible causes of one or two amplitude minima associated with a phase shift in the vertical profiles of the diurnal and semi-diurnal tides observed in the upper mesosphere is considered. For the diurnal and semi-diurnal tides, the reflection of certain tidal modes propagating in the lower thermosphere through certain temperature profiles may explain the observations. The results as well as the relationship between the tidal structure and the thermal structure of the high atmosphere are discussed. It is shown that the results support the temperature profile proposed by Chandra (1980) as more realistic than Standard models.
