Some frequency reference points in the 1.5 micrometer optical communication band are reviewed, and experimental results on frequency references for the 1.52 micrometers He-Ne laser are presented. A 15-NH3 absorption within the tuning range of the laser is found to be weak and not saturable. A diode laser was used to investigate to 1.52 micrometers Ne transition observed via the optogalvanic effect in a hollow cathode discharge. Using a similar discharge tube intracavity in a He-Ne laser, optogalvanic saturated absorption dips of about 6 were found in 20-Ne discharges at about 1 torr (133 Pa) pressure. The full width at half maximum was about 100 MHz.
