The ionization caused by galactic cosmic rays and electron precipitation causes the formation of positive ions and electrons in Titan's atmosphere. Because the thermal velocity of electrons is higher than that of positive ions and ion clusters, the aerosols will become negatively charged. The lack of electrophilic molecular species results in large concentrations of free electrons throughout the lower atmosphere. These free electrons increase the conductivity of the lower atmosphere above values typical for the terrestrial atmosphere and cause additional absoprtion of radio waves propagating through the lower atmosphere. Because the aerosol particles are highly charged, coagulation is inhibited, particles are smaller, and settling speeds are reduced. Therefore the atmosphere contains large numbers of particles at all altitudes and has a much higher optical depth than it would without particle charging.
