Saturn’s magnetosphere and the moons and rings therein provide a natural laboratory for studying the interactions between neutral gas and plasma. These interactions affect the magnetospheric dynamics on both local and global scales, and require that we consider several types of interactions from photoionization, electron impact ionization, elastic collisions, and inelastic collisions (including charge exchange). The relative importance of these interactions will vary depending the geometry and characteristics of the region being examined. For this paper we will discuss plasma-neutral interactions local to Enceladus and use observations, 3-dimensional simulations, and analytic solutions to study the resulting momentum and mass loading and energy dissipation in that region. The simulations are based on a multi-fluid plasma dynamic infrastructure that incorporate collisions as well as sources and losses between neutral and plasma fluids. They are directly compared with observations made by the CAPS instrument during the E3 and E5 flyby encounters and discussed in the context of analytic solutions and the characteristics local to Enceladus that govern the solutions.
