In accordance with a map of lineaments in the Italian region, the intersections of lineaments where, according to the results of previous studies, strong earthquakes may be expected to occur, have been identified. The parameters used for the pattern recognition method are mostly based on elevation and slope. Many control experiments were carried out to test the validity and stability of the results obtained. Results show several locations where strong earthquakes have not occurred in historic times, but where they may occur in the future.
