Nonresonant particle (proton) interactions with a turbulent state consisting of Alfven solitons are considered. Parallel and perpendicular velocities are computed and their phase averaged values are used to find corresponding energy changes. While the protons heat in the perpendicular direction, associated with this is a cooling in the parallel direction.
