Relative paleointensity estimates of the geomagnetic field variations were made from five marine cores distributed in the Tyrrhenian Sea, the eastern Mediterranean, and the south Indian Ocean. Oxygen isotopes and tephrachronology provided independent time frameworks for the last 80 kyr. There is excellent agreement between the records when plotted on the same time scale, and features as short as 2 or 3 kyr could be resolved with good precision. The overall curve compares quite well with the global archeomagnetic data before 10 kyr BP and provides an excellent fit to the sparse absolute paleointensities obtained from lava flows within the period 0-40 kyr. Two well-marked minima at which the geomagnetic field intensity fell to 22 and 28 percent of the present value occurred at 39 and 60 kyr, respectively.
