It is argued that the problem of determining the origin of jumps of secular geomagnetic variations can be solved most effectively by means of spherical harmonic analysis. The application of this approach is demonstrated for the 1969 epoch. It is concluded that the results of the analysis depend strongly on the method chosen for the preliminary processing of observational data.
