Theoretical and observational work indicates that He+ and O+ ions eventually outnumber protons in the recovery phase ring current, owing to the different loss rates in each case for charge exchange with geocoronal hydrogen. Satellite and ground-based measurements of hydrogen, oxygen, and helium emissions in the resulting equatorial aurora provide a means of monitoring both composition and flux changes, and perhaps would yield some information on the mean ion energy in each case. Observations from Huancayo are discussed.
