Studies of the effects of interplanetary magnetic field polarity (IMFP) on geomagnetic and ionospheric phenomena over the equatorial region are reviewed with attention to Bz and sector effects. A new result of IMFP effects on low-latitude geomagnetic fields is presented, and data from several stations are examined in order to determine the seasonal dependence and possible mechanisms. The significance of some remaining problems, such as the Bx and By or sector effects on mid- and low-latitude fields during disturbed periods, is considered.
