An analytical technique is developed which permits the derivation of the mass composition of primary cosmic radiation (PCR) by incorporating experimental data. Specific attention is given to utilizing nonparametric statistics for probability-density estimation and the quantitative comparison of multivariate distributions. Algorithms developed for experimental data handling are employed for the initial processing of events generated by means of the Monte Carlo method in order to check the present method. An experimental event can be selected efficiently that is initiated by primary protons and iron nuclei, and the energy spectrum of the incident protons and neutrons can be determined with the aid of the mutivariate data classification. The proposed method can facilitate the study of cosmic-ray interactions with the terrestrial atmosphere specifically for proton-nuclei and nuclei-nuclei interactions with energies of 10 exp 15-10 exp 17 eV.
