Earth Magnetosphere: Turbulence
Scientific paper
Interball-1 high-latitude data have shown that just outside the magnetopause main current sheet and at its boundary the turbulent boundary layer exists with an average RMS maximum of about 25 nT and an occurrence rate of 83%. Alfvénic type non-linear waves dominate in the turbulent boundary layer. They produce "magnetic bubbles" with highly reduced magnetic field and heated plasma inside, average ion heating reaches 200-400 eV (i.e. 1.5-3 times). Part of these "bubbles" are transported inside the magnetopause and they constitute a mechanism of plasma penetration into the cusp. Geometrically, the turbulent boundary layer above the outer cusp could be estimated as a spot with effective size 6 RE with characteristic amplitude maximum of 37 nT.
