A method is described for the determination of the chemical composition and density of a planetary atmosphere from remote measurements of the spectral intensity of radiation from the high-temperature gas formed around a descent vehicle during hypersonic entry in the 70-150 km height range. It is suggested that this method is feasible for measurements in the Venusian atmosphere, both in daytime and nighttime conditions. It is recommended that the results of this method be used for space probe studies of planets during the aerodynamic braking segment of descent.
