The CLUSTER spacecraft have crossed repeatedly the perpendicular Earth's bow shock and provided multi-spacecraft measurements. By means of data from the Cluster Ion Spectrometry experiment (CIS), which observes the 3D-ion distribution function of the major species (H+, He2+, He+, O+) in the energy range of 5 eV to 40 keV with 4- second resolution we have examined the evolution of the ion distribution across the nearly perpendicular bow shock. Some fraction of the incident solar wind is reflected at the shock. The majority of ions are directly transmitted throught the shock. Their temperature rises by more than the adiabatic rate that corresponds to the magnetic field compression. Beams of reflected ions were observed simultaneously at all spacecraft locations and could be tracked from upstream up to the shock itself. A detailed study of the velocity distribution of the reflected ions during the shock crossing has shown, that the ring and beam distribution are intimately connected. We have investigated the spatial and temporal evolution of ion distributions across several nearly perpendicular bow shock encounters and studied their behavior according to the local shock geometrie and plasma conditions at each spacecraft.
