The author discusses the stability properties of the contact discontinuity in the working surface of a supersonic hydrodynamic jet. He shows that the stability of a cap-like region may be responsible for the formation of a cocoon and an annular shock after the terminating Mach disc. The author also studies the effects of the presence of vortex rings in the cocoon on the jet and on the shocked ambient medium. He shows that the Mach number of the flow in the cocoon remains very close to unity as the flow passes through a number of oblique shocks. The vortex motion also pinches the jet. These features are in agreement with the numerical simulation of the supersonic jets present in the literature.
