We revisit the field effect procedure used to characterise the slow dynamics of glassy disordered insulators. It is found that in some cases the "characteristic" time extracted is useless as it is essentially determined by the experimental procedure. In general it cannot be thought of as a "typical intrinsic relaxation time" of the systems studied in any simple manner. Implications, especially regarding the analysis of the carrier concentration effect in the emergence of glassiness, are briefly outlined.
