The distribution of the attenuation coefficient Q-1 in the Earth's core, found from seismic data, is explained theoretically. It is shown how two different mechanisms of seismic wave attenuation may account for the large anelasticity in the inner core. One mechanism takes into account slow relaxation processes near the melting transition at the inner core boundary. In another we propose a quasi-polycrystalline structure for the inner core. Remarks on a possible structure of the Q-1 distribution in the outer core are made.
