The possible behaviour of the seismic velocities υp and υs at a polymorphic phase transition or melting transition is investigated. The starting point is the free enthalpy of an elastic continuum where a first-order phase transition takes place. The transition is described with the help of the Landau theory. The interaction between order parameter η and strain tensor uij provides correction terms to the elastic constants and in this manner the seismic velocities may change. Some examples for which the theory seems applicable are presented.
