An investigation of two aspects of historic observations of Mars is presented. Twelve canals, which had been studied in the past, were chosen. The directions of most of these canals were found to coincide with the bright streaks photographed by Mariner 9. Secular changes of three dark regions on Mars appear to have a regular nature. It is speculated that the canals reflect the dominant wind systems and that their large-scale circulation pattern may have changed around 1900
