A theory which accounts for the earth's magnetic field and its changes during the planet's history is presented. Evidence presented suggests that periodically the voltage may build up between the earth and the ionosphere and the magnetosphere to the point where the entire system is discharged in a single lightning stroke of unimaginable proportions. The quick freezing of Siberian mammoths, the Tunguska explosion of 1908, Australian tektites, the sudden melting of glacial ice about eleven thousand years ago, and the magnetic field reversals may have all been caused by this electrical discharge.
