The nonthermal continuum detected in the nightside of the northern polar region was also observed in the nightside of the southern subpolar region at geocentric distances of 1.1-1.7 earth radius. The observations show that this radiation is generated in the nocturnal midlatitudinal ionospheric trough. The continuum at 1486 kHz is modulated by the diurnal rotation of the earth's magnetic dipole with the appearance of emission at the time of the displacement of the South Magnetic Pole to the nightside of the magnetosphere. The latitudinal extension of the propagation of the emission along the geomagnetic latitude of 5-20 deg is strongly limited by the polar boundary of about 70 deg. The unstable position of the equatorial boundary and the intensity of the emission depend on the level of the geomagnetic activity. The beaming of the continuum emission at 1486 kHz and the possible resonant half-harmonics of the local gyrofrequency for the generation of that frequency are discussed.
