The Kyokko and Jikiken satellites were put into a semipolar and semiequatorial orbit, respectively, to study auroral physics. Contributions of the satellites include UV auroral images covering from the dayside to nightside regions; survey of low energetic particle precipitations in the auroral zone, especially related to the inverted V events; high frequency resolution of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) spectra indicating the movement of the acceleration region; discovery of the L-O and Z modes of AKR; confirmation of the plasma convection outside of the plasmapause; and shock-like movement of the plasmapause associated with the enhancement of auroras. The satellites also made contributions of the field of the radio propagation, and wave-particle interactions.
