The IBEX-Hi instrument is the most sensitive energetic neutral atom (ENA) imager ever flown because the ENA signal it is designed to detect is intrinsically very faint. As sensitive as IBEX-Hi is, the signal rate associated with ENAs of heliospheric origin is nevertheless only a few millihertz. Thus, studies of long-term variations in the heliospheric signal observed by IBEX-Hi require accurate characterization and consistent removal of backgrounds and noise. Instrument detection efficiency also must be monitored for possible changes. The most significant continuous background in the first two and a half years of IBEX data collection arises from cosmic rays: it has changed slowly by roughly 30% . We present how this background is identified and removed. We also characterize a variety of intermittently present backgrounds (e.g., due to solar wind or solar energetic protons). Finally, a technique for monitoring the in situ absolute efficiency of the IBEX-Hi detector section over time is presented and applied to the data. To date, changes in efficiency are near the limit of this technique's statistical significance, on the order of 1-2%.
