Ordinary analysis of data from the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) are ill adapted to situations where the flux of ions is small because the underlying statistical distribution of count rates is not anymore Gaussian, but Poissonian. We have implemented an unbiased analysis tool that takes the true Poissonian distribution into account and improved on details in the instrumental response function. We present data anaylzed with both the conventional method and the new method and compare them after checking for internal consistency of our own inversion technique. While we find overall agreement during situations where the ion flux is high, we find the expected substantial deviations when fluxes are low. We apply our method to deriving the flux of ions in spurathermal tails and compare our results with previous ones.
