Neutral density and wind enhancements in the polar cap (>75o) were examined using CHAMP and GRACE satellite accelerometer data. The enhancements generally occurred during periods of geomagnetic disturbance and were associated with a solar wind shock or an electric field and magnetic field pulse. Density enhancements correlated with the interplanetary electric and magnetic fields with a time lag of several hours. Through the events intense Poynting fluxes were present in the polar cap according to DMSP satellite ion drift and magnetic field perturbation measurements. The role of cross-track winds and ion drift velocities in the observed polar cap structures was examined. The density and wind enhancements are interpreted as caused by Joule heating due to deposit of solar wind energy through Poynting flux. The results are shown to be in general agreement with Weimer empirical model and Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics Global Circulation Model (TIEGCM) simulations of Joule heating in the polar cap.
