I will describe a diverse set of scientific problems that can be attacked with technologies based on manifestations of state-selection in atomic ensembles. For example, atomic population inversion enables masers, which can be used as clocks and for precision tests of Lorentz and CPT symmetry. Spin polarization of noble gases enables high-sensitivity gas-phase magnetic resonance, with applications in materials science and biomedical imaging. Coherent superposition of atomic states enables manipulation of dispersion relations and thus "slow" and "stopped" light, with potential applications in quantum information processing and elsewhere.
