High resolution imaging with ground-based telescopes is now possible with adaptive optics. The corrected field of view obtained with regular adaptive optics, using a single deformable mirror in the pupil, is however limited. Large field of view correction can be obtained by correcting the turbulence volume above the telescope. This corresponds to the concept of multi-conjugate adaptive optics [MCAO] which uses several deformable mirrors optically conjugated at various altitudes and several guide stars for wavefront sensing. An optimal MCAO reconstruction is proposed to deduce the correction phase on the DMs from the wavefront measurements. This approach accounts for wavefront sensing noise but also makes use of a turbulence profile model. The impact on the performance of discrepancies between this model and the true profile is studied. Finally, a general overview of our current and planned studies on MCAO is given.
