Some early-type galaxies are now known to contain significant amounts of molecular gas. There is also a broad spectrum of evidence, from the UV through the radio, that some star formation may be occuring in these cold-gas-rich early type galaxies. But until now it has not been possible to make accurate estimates of the star formation rates in early type galaxies; one of the major problems has been very low angular resolution in the FIR data. The present proposal requests time for MIPS imaging of seven CO-rich early type galaxies. High resolution FIR images will be the key to estimating their star formation rates, testing the radio/FIR correlation, and gaining a new perspective on the star formation process in an unusual environment. The seven galaxies requested here will be supplemented with additional targets which have already been allocated time for MIPS imaging.
