The 15-μm emissions from carbon dioxide in the region at and above the mesopause display a very large variability that has been difficult to explain on the basis of standard climatologies. These emissions, which comprise the most important cooling mechanism for that region of the atmosphere, depend on the local densities of CO2 and atomic oxygen, as well as on temperature. In this presentation, we address the hypothesis that much of the observed variability can be accounted for by the atmospheric tides, primarily because of their effects on temperature. Using model atmospheres incorporating perturbations derived from Global Scale Wave Model, we systematically model the limb radiance to determine its dependence on latitude and local time for different seasons of the year. We then compare the calculated radiance and its variability, with that seen in the continuous and nearly global observations being made by the SABER instrument on the TIMED satellite, which indeed reveal stark contrasts with latitude and local time. We will present examples of the comparison and discuss the implications.
