A pair of variably spaced femtosecond laser pulses is used to coherently excite coupled phonon-plasmon modes in p-doped GaAs, observed through anisotropic changes in the refractive index by electro-optic detection. The ultrafast dynamics is appreciably different when the spacing between the pump pulses is an integer or half-integer multiple of the phonon period. This is explained by a mechanism in which the impedance of single-particle (electron-hole) excitations is tuned to that of plasmon thereby affecting Landau damping through a modulation of the phonon strength in the coupled modes.
