In our study we analyze several individual upstream events observed by Cluster in the foreshock region. The region in front of the Earth's quasi-parallel bow shock is dominated by energetic particles and low-frequency, large-amplitude magnetic waves. The energetic ions are scattered in pitch-angle by these waves while the waves are thought to be excited locally by these energetic ions. The theoretical model of this coupling between waves and energetic particles has been verified in the past and proved to describe the physical process accurately. In our analysis we compare the predictions of the theory at each event with the observations by focusing on the two aspects of the wave-particle coupling: the excitation of waves by energetic particles and the pitch-angle scattering of energetic ions by waves.
