A numerical analysis of two-dimensional MHD magnetic reconnection as an initial boundary problem is presented. It is found that the reconnection process is strongly dependent on boundary conditions although less dependent on internal conditions. On the downstream side of the magnetic separatrix, a slow mode shock layer is observed to form. In addition, plasma is noted to heat to a considerable degree near the X-type neutral line, accelerated up to the Alfven speed by the slow mode shock.
