The design of a lunar base will depend critically on the missions the base has to support. A reference design for lunar base which will mainly support in situ resource recovery missions is discussed. Lunar base evolution is organized into six phases to trace the technical and operational characteristics of the base. System-level functional requirements are derived as well as interface of base functions and analyzed employing systems engineering approach. Trade study on power systems is introduced as an example of defining subsystems.
