Lunar bases have occupied the mind of scientists, engineers and space planners for over 40 years. In fact, some of the earliest studies would have come to fruition, people would have been working on the Moon for a decade or more. The concept of what is a lunar base has changed over the years since it was first envisioned. It evolved from a military installation where a battle might be fought, to a laboratory to study the lunar geology and the stars, to an integral part of a larger plan to explore our closest neighbors in space. This paper can only touch on the highlights of those multitude of lunar base studies. It can only present an overview of the many ideas and concepts that have come to be called lunar bases.
