Characteristics of tropospheric aerosols over a tropical station, Trivandrum, are studied using ruby lidar data obtained during the period October 1986-December 1987. Tropospheric vertical eddy diffusion coefficients in the altitude range 5.5-14.5 km have been estimated from the aerosol continuity equation using the altitude profiles of aerosol extinction. These are compared with the values reported in the literature employing different techniques, and are found to be consistent with them. The effect of horizontal divergences on the estimated value of the diffusion coefficient is found to be insignificant. The seasonal variation of tropospheric aerosols is significantly influenced by the wet removal processes.
