In this paper we describe a new method for determining the atmospheric heating rates associated with the strongly exothermic H + O3 yields O2 + OH(v) reaction. The approach differs from previous methods in that few assumptions are made about the relaxation of the vibrationally excited OH reaction products. Using this new approach, together with available laboratory measurements and airglow observations, we show that approximately 75 percent of the exothermicity of the H + O3 reaction is deposited as heat near the mesopause. This heating efficiency is in good agreement with the results of previous assessments which employed various vibrationally excited OH relaxation models.
