Current understandings of large-scale electric fields and currents and magnetic variations resulting from them in the mid-latitude ionosphere and plasmasphere under undisturbed conditions are reviewed. Following a discussion of the atmospheric dynamo mechanism for the generation of mid-latitude atmospheric electric fields, consideration is given to new information concerning the variation of the Sq field as a function of season and universal time and plasmaspheric electric fields, and it is shown that the two-dimensional dynamo model is incapable of accounting for the seasonal and UT variations. It is thus concluded that three-dimensional plasmaspheric current systems with hemispheric coupling are required to explain the Sq variations. Basic dynamo equations and two- and three-dimensional models derived from them by various authors are presented, and a plasmaspheric-ionospheric current system capable of accounting for the observations is derived.
