Present knowledge of the eclipsing binary system Beta Lyrae is reviewed. Observational evidence is presented of the luminosity, photometric behavior, B and V light curves, infrared light curves, ultraviolet light curves, radio behavior, spectroscopic behavior of the B8 II star, expanding gas shell, satellite lines, and emission line sources, and polarization changes of the unusual multiple visual system. Models explaining the characteristics of the system are discussed, and it is pointed out that while the system is believed to consist of a larger B8 II star revolving around an early B star surrounded by a gaseous disk which is immersed in an absorbing atmospheric envelope, the evolutionary stage of the system, which is known to be losing mass, is still uncertain.
