Light that arrives from a star that is not at zenith is refracted by the atmosphere; blue light is in this fashion made to deviate more than red. The Risley prism used by the Kitt Peak 4-m telescope compensates for atmospheric dispersion up to 60 deg from the zenith in the visible wavelength range. The prism apparatus consists of a pair of contrarotating composite prisms, and has been found to yield good axial performance under converging light at f/8 and f/30. The quality of the field imagery obtained is a function of the properties of the primary-secondary mirror configuration.
