A relatively simple expression is obtained for the K-alpha photon flux from weakly ionized iron, which is emitted during reprocessing of hard (energy greater than 7 keV) X-rays from solar flares in dense layers of the solar atmosphere. An exact solution to the radiative-transfer equation is used for this purpose. A detailed comparison is made between the efficiencies of K-alpha fluorescence and electron-impact excitation. Information that may be derived from observations of iron K-alpha emission in the wavelength range from 1.93 to 1.94 A is briefly discussed.
