The physics of blazar flares is still not well understood. Currently favored emission models include electron inverse Compton (IC) scattering of low-energy synchrotron photons from within the jet or photons generated outside the jet, emission produced by the proton initiated cascades or synchrotron emission of extremely high-energy protons or muons. Simultaneous broadband observations of blazars in a flaring state provide excellent tests of these emission models. Observations of blazars at GeV (FGST-LAT) and TeV (MAGIC/VERITAS) energies, as well as in the X-ray energy band (XMM), allow profiling the spectral shape of the high-energy component of their emission. The MAGIC and VERITAS collaborations have committed substantial fraction of the available observing time to the blazar science program, which includes monitoring as well as detailed study of the flaring blazars. Here we report on the recent observational results, as well as detailed modeling of the broadband spectral energy distributions of known blazars detected at very high energies in a flaring state.
