Experimental measurements of the flux of muons stopping in a depth of 850 hg/sq cm are reported. Muon stops were recorded in the second horizontal plane of the Baksan underground scintillation telescope, allowing the reconstruction of particle trajectories and the detection of muons of atmospheric origin as well as those generated locally. Muon-electron cascade events Halling 867 were recorded during 37 h of detector operation, and used to calculate a muon lifetime of 2.15 + or - 0.14 microsec, a combined atmospheric and locally generated muon stopping rate of 0.0033 + or - 0.0001 in a 100 g/sq cm standard area, and a locally generated atmospheric muon stopping ratio of 0.33 + or - 0.05. Results are found to be in agreement with theoretical predictions based on common underground slow muon generation mechanisms
