We present an analysis of more than 100 limb profiles of the OII 83.4 nm airglow feature measured in 2004 by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Limb Imager (SSULI) on the DMSP-F16 satellite and compare these data to ionospheric parameters obtained from near-coincident ionosonde stations. This study represents the most extensive comparison ever made between this extreme-ultraviolet emission and a ground-truth ionospheric data source and thus is a vital step toward developing a method by which daytime ion density profiles, defined by the Chapman parameters of the associated electron density profile, can be inferred on a global scale through routine remote sensing at these wavelengths. This study also lays the foundation for a more comprehensive investigation of the detailed physics behind the OII excitation and emission processes using the Remote Atmospheric and Ionospheric Detection System (RAIDS) to be flown aboard the International Space Station. Currently on track for launch in early September, 2009, the RAIDS EUV spectrograph will provide unprecedented simultaneous measurements of the OII 83.4 and 61.7 nm emission lines. We present initial RAIDS measurements of these two airglow features and compare them to forward model calculations to illuminate their differing radiative transfer properties through the ionosphere and the expected revelations about this complex but promising ionospheric remote sensing technique.
