The paper defines the principle parameters of a plasma and sets forth derivations of some of the basic relations in continuum hydromagnetics. An approximate solution of the basic equations of hydromagnetics for an ideal fluid is outlined for small-amplitude waves. The equations of Alfven wave propagation are derived along with the corresponding energy theorem, showing the equipartition of hydrodynamic and electromagnetic energy in an Alfven wave. The treatment of shocks in hydromagnetics is sketched, showing the existence of two subclasses of shocks, the tangential discontinuity and the rotational discontinuity. Zemplen's theorem on shock propagation is stated for the hydromagnetic case.
