The current state of knowledge concerning the diffuse cosmic gamma radiation is critically examined. The reliability of all experiments is investigated in an attempt to explain apparent contradictions in the results. Results related to the dependence of the diffuse gamma radiation on energy and direction are summarized. Attention is also given to the origin of the radiation and difficulties found in connection with individual models are discussed.
